Luca Polizzi is Research Policy Officer at the European Commission, Directorate General for Research and Innovation (DG R&I), since 2016; currently working as International Relations Officer, attaché Research & Innovation Section, as part of the European Union (EU) Diplomatic Service at the Delegation of the EU in Tel Aviv (since November 2019). While at DG R&I in Brussels, he was responsible for science cooperation with the gulf countries and innovation actions in Africa (2018-2019); previously Policy Assistant Director of industrial technologies (2017/2018), and Research Policy Officer in nanotechnologies and advanced materials (2016/2017). Between 2014 and 2016, he was at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), in Saudi Arabia, dealing with the administration of research funding programmes, mainly with the US. He moved to KAUST after 8 years in Brussels (2006-2014), where he was Senior Policy and Funding Executive for Research at the EU Office of Scottish Enterprise (Scotland Europa), the Scottish Government Agency for innovation and growth. Luca is lecturer and guest speaker on EU Policy and Funding in different organisations; e.g. College of Europe, University of Sassari, University Cattolica of Milan, European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA), and, in Scotland, he gave several speeches at the University of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews among others. Between 2004 and 2006 he was Professor in European Law at the University Marconi, in Rome. Luca graduated from “La Sapienza” and earned his MA at the Katholieke University of Leuven (BE) in EU policies, currently working on his PhD at the VUB in science diplomacy in the Middle-East.
